common ivy
Hedera, commonly called ivy, is a genus of the araliaceae family with 15 species of perennial, woody, climbing plants. At ground level they spread out, not exceeding 5-20 cm in height. However, when they find a suitable surface to climb on; trees, rocks or man-made structures such as fences, walls or trellises, they can grow up to 30 m high.
The leaves of the species are of two types: the juveniles, found on the climbing stems, are lobed and the adults are entire and cordate, on the flowering stems which grow in full sun, usually more than 2 m above the ground on the tops of trees or rocks. The shoots also differ, the young are slender and flexible with small aerial roots to cling to surfaces; the adults are thicker, self-supporting and have no roots.
