calathea care tips
Calatheas and Ctenanthes are tropical plants that thrive in a humid environment. They prefer consistently slightly moist compost, so try not to let the soil dry out completely. At the same time, avoid overwatering, as their roots do not like sitting in excess water. Check the compost with your finger before watering and, whenever possible, use rainwater, filtered water or water with a low mineral content.
Choose a position with plenty of bright, indirect light. Keep your plant away from direct sunlight, which can scorch its delicate leaves. Avoid draughts and sudden temperature changes, too. These tropical plants are happiest in temperatures of around 18–25°C / 64–77°F.
Humidity is particularly important for keeping the leaves looking healthy and beautiful. A humidifier can help, or you can group your Calathea with other houseplants to create a more humid microclimate. With the right conditions and a little attention, your plant will reward you with its wonderful decorative foliage.
